The challenge of wavering faith

Posted on 31 Oct 2019

Do you often wonder why GOD has not answered your prayer when you come to Him over and over again about the same issue? Could it be because of your faith, your faith wavers?

James 1:2-8

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. 6But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Our faith is not always steady, it wavers. One of the marks of our devotion to LORD Jesus is the fact that we pray and pray and we do not give up because GOD did not answer our prayer according to our schedule.

We keep asking and asking nothing happens, we judge ourselves, condemn ourselves, we conclude that GOD does not always answer prayers. He does always answers, not may be the way we like it to. Would you say your faith is steady, consistent, unwavering, trusting with all your heart?

GOD is accomplishing His task. When we argue with GOD, He is showing us we are impatient, we do not know His will and we are not ready. We began to doubt what GOD says; “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” Matthew 7:7. Wavering faith does not get anything from GOD.

Causes of wavering faith;

* When we choose to go by our feelings rather than the Word of GOD.

When we move our eyes from Word of GOD and His promises to how we feel, we are going to be unstable in our faith and GOD knew that. You never have to question what GOD says. What He says is true all the time. When we choose to go by our feelings rather than Word of GOD our faith is going to waver.

* When we yield to reason rather than believe GOD.

You cannot go by reason because reasoning and faith do not always agree. He may not answer our petition the way we would like. It may be that GOD sees something we have not thought about, He is not going to answer our prayer until He deals with that. If there is an instant GOD is waiting because He has a legitimate, good, divine, helpful reason for it. Often time when GOD does not answer our prayer when we would like, we doubt Him, we doubt the point of prayer because things don’t happen the way when we expect it and how we expect it. Ask yourself a question do you go by reason or by Word of GOD?

*We fail to see GOD working in our circumstances.

Remember that as a follower of LORD Jesus Christ nothing happens to you unless He allows it. The difficulties, hardship, pain, suffering, the moments of doubt he allows because He is trying to grow us up. How is He going to grow us up if He does not test us, try us, if He does not allow us to face things that we don’t understand, things we don’t like? Things that will drive us to the Word. We turn to Him and trust Him, we turn to the Word of GOD to strengthen our faith or I find myself wobbling and wasting time. GOD knows exactly the right time to meet every single need we have. Sometimes He waits a long time. If you have asked something in the will of GOD relax, it will come at His timing when you are ready.

* When we listen to negative counsel.

If you ever think that GOD does not care about you, look at the cross. There is nothing to equal that. There is no love equal to what GOD did through His Son LORD Jesus Christ at the Calvary, nothing, nothing will ever happen to match that. When we listen to negative counsel we are heading for trouble. If you are asking for something in your life probably it is best to keep it to yourself. There are somethings GOD wants only the two of you to deal with it ‘don’t talk to anybody else about it, just talk to Me about it’. When you think GOD has not done anything about it, He had all that time to work on you to get you ready for the answer and often time right before GOD prepared it all for us we want to give up. Don’t give up on GOD, He knows exactly where you are on your life.

* When we focus on our circumstances rather than GOD.

He always has His objective; our love, devotion and commitment to Him. His mind is on our relationship to Him. You cannot rush, hurry GOD. He knows the right time, right place, the right person, GOD knows exactly what you need and the right time to provide it. GOD wants to best for us then we must be ready to wait for His best.

* When we are ignorant of GOD’s ways.

Whatever we are asking for He usually has something else in mind also. GOD is a loving GOD. GOD does not hold anything back that good for us. Our faith wavers when we don’t get it when we want it, the way we want it and it may be that we don’t get it through the way we expected to come. The more we understand the ways of GOD, the more patient we become because often times He withholds what I am looking for because He has got something better than what I was looking for. Heavenly Father wouldn’t withhold anything from you that’s good for you, why would He give you something less than the best. He has big plans for all of us and that is to conform us to likeness, image of our LORD Jesus Christ, making us like Himself.

* When we feel guilty for present or past sins. GOD does not want you to looking back, He wants you to look straight towards Him. He forgives all sins, He wipes it clean with the blood of LORD Jesus, we are His children, He is confirming us to His likeness, He is working in our life every single day because He knows ultimately where we will be.

Ask yourself the following questions to help correct our wavering faith;

1.Where these doubts coming from? Probably something in your past or something going on in your life. If you are living in sin, the spirit of confusion will envelop the life of the person who is living in sin and talking to GOD.

2.Did GOD promise to meet all our needs? GOD meets all our needs, our wants and desires that are not in conflict with Word of GOD. Because He loves us too much, not to give us what we shouldn’t have. He always has something better.

3.Didn’t GOD promise to be with us all the time? LORD Jesus says “I will never leave you nor forsake you” Hebrews 13:5. He is always interested in drawing us to Himself and making our life count. If we live by our feelings we will never know where we are with our relationship with GOD. We live by the truth of Word of GOD.

4.Didn’t GOD give us the Holy Spirit? When you are saved He will indwell you with His Holy Spirit. GOD says “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you forever;” John 14:16. He is our guide, helper, source of our strength, He is going to be there for you in any circumstances, He will empower you, able you, He is going to be your very life. That’s our security, that’s our absolute assurance. Once you receive the Holy Spirit you cannot be lost. Once He writes your name in the Lambs book of Life it cannot be erased. Once you are saved by the grace of GOD you are forever saved.

If you start living in sin, chastising comes. He will chastise you until you think you cannot stand it anymore, and you get straighten out with GOD. Once you trust LORD Jesus Christ as your Saviour you are forever child of GOD. Because He loves you, because He cares. GOD says ‘you were sealed for the day of redemption.’ Ephesians 4:30.

The price has been paid for your forgiveness for your salvation for all eternity. He is an awesome GOD. He loves us so much we often cannot describe. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. What else He needs to do to prove His love for you. When He went to cross He paid for your sins debt in full. Do you believe in Him? Are you willing to ask Him to forgive you your sins? Surrender your life to Him and began your life new with LORD Jesus in your life, sealed with the Holy Spirit and one of these days you will be welcomed to home by the Almighty GOD, amen.
